Common gambling myths, debunked

Most gambling “tips” are based on misunderstanding how the games work. Here are the big ones.

“This machine is due for a win”

No. Each spin is independent and decided by a random number generator with no memory of what came before. A long dry spell doesn’t make a payout more likely.

“I’m on a hot streak”

Streaks are just normal randomness — visible in hindsight, useless as a predictor. The game’s house edge is unchanged whether you’re up or down.

“This betting system beats the casino”

Systems like doubling after a loss (Martingale) don’t change the odds — they just reshape when you lose. A bad run plus table limits can wipe out a bankroll fast. No staking pattern overcomes a negative expected value.

“Near-misses mean I’m close”

Two jackpot symbols and a near-third feel meaningful but aren’t — the result was already decided randomly; the display is just presentation.

“I can win it back”

Chasing losses is the most dangerous myth of all. Losses are not a debt the game will repay. If you’re gambling to recover money, stop — see responsible gambling.
