How online slots work

Every spin is decided by software the moment you press the button — here’s what’s actually going on.

The random number generator (RNG)

Online slots don’t have physical reels. A random number generator produces an unpredictable result for each spin, and the graphics simply display that result. Each spin is independent: the machine has no memory of previous spins and is not “due” to pay out.

Reels, symbols and paylines

A slot has a set of reels and symbols. A payline is a pattern across the reels that pays when matching symbols land on it. Modern slots may have dozens or hundreds of paylines, or use “ways to win” systems where adjacent matching symbols pay regardless of exact position.

Volatility (variance)

Volatility describes how a slot pays over time. Low-volatility games pay small amounts frequently; high-volatility games pay rarely but can pay larger amounts. Volatility doesn’t change your long-run expected return — only how bumpy the ride is.

What this means for you

There’s no skill or system that changes a slot’s outcome, and the maths favours the operator over time (see RTP and house edge). Treat slots as paid entertainment, set limits in advance, and never chase losses.
