Progressive jackpots explained

Progressive jackpots are the headline-grabbing millions. Here’s the mechanism behind them — and the reality of the odds.

How they grow

A small slice of every bet placed on the game (or across a network of games) is added to a shared prize pool. The pool grows until someone wins it, then resets to a seed value. Networked progressives pool bets from many casinos, which is how they reach seven figures; standalone ones grow from a single game.

The catch: odds and RTP

  • The chance of hitting the top jackpot on any spin is extremely small — often millions to one.
  • That jackpot contribution is part of the game’s overall RTP, but most of it sits in a prize you’ll almost certainly never win — so day-to-day returns can feel lower.
  • Some progressives are “must-drop” (guaranteed to pay by a certain amount or time) — check the game’s rules.

What to take from this

Progressives are entertainment with a lottery-style long shot attached, not a strategy. The base game still works like any slot. Set limits before you play.
