Plain-English gambling glossary

The terms you’ll run into, without the jargon.

RTP
Return to player — the share of total wagers a game is designed to return over the long run.
House edge
The operator’s built-in advantage; equal to 100% minus RTP.
Volatility / variance
How a game pays out — low = frequent small wins, high = rare larger wins.
RNG
Random number generator — the software that decides each outcome.
Payline
A pattern across the reels that pays when matching symbols land on it.
Wagering requirement
How many times a bonus must be wagered before winnings can be withdrawn.
Max bet
The largest stake allowed, sometimes restricted while a bonus is active.
KYC
Know your customer — identity checks operators must run, usually before withdrawal.
Self-exclusion
A tool to block yourself from an operator (or all operators) for a set period.
Deposit limit
A cap you set on how much you can deposit over a chosen period.
